The real ROI of learning Dutch in the Netherlands

Learning Dutch in the Netherlands has a clear financial return, even though English is widely spoken. Salaries for non-Dutch speakers are typically 5–10% lower, while reaching a B1 level can increase earning potential by roughly 15–25%. On an average expat salary of about €55,000, that translates to an extra €8,000 or more per year.

The cost of learning Dutch is relatively low compared to the upside. Courses to B1 level usually range from €1,500 to €2,500, meaning the payback period can be as short as two to three months once your salary increases. In many cases, employers cover these costs, effectively making the investment free.

Not learning Dutch carries a hidden cost. Salary gaps widen at higher levels, with differences of 15–25% or more in senior roles. Over several years, this can result in tens of thousands of euros in lost income.

Career growth is also affected. Many management, client-facing, and public sector roles require Dutch, creating a ceiling for English-only professionals. While you can start a career without Dutch, advancing often becomes difficult without it.

Job market access is significantly broader with Dutch. A large portion of roles, especially outside international companies, are only available to Dutch speakers, meaning you may be excluding yourself from the majority of opportunities.

There are also indirect financial benefits. Speaking Dutch improves access to housing, simplifies dealing with contracts and taxes, and strengthens professional networks, all of which can lead to better opportunities and fewer costly mistakes.

Overall, learning Dutch offers a strong return: a relatively small (or zero) upfront investment, fast payback, and long-term gains that can exceed €30,000–€50,000 over several years. It may be less valuable if you work fully remotely for non-Dutch companies or plan to stay in the country only briefly, but for most people building a career in the Netherlands, it is a high-ROI decision.
